Nintendo’s Kaplan : Gamers were bored before the Wii

Perrin Kaplan, Nintendo of America VP of Marketing and Corporate Affairs makes a bold statement after Nintendo receives another marketing honor thats bound to get the blood of hardcore gamers boiling :

“A major insight that Nintendo had early on was that they saw that gamers were getting bored, even though they didn’t know it yet..”

This statement was also backed up by Robert Matthews, NOA’s senior director of consumer marketing :

“Just look at the way people consume entertainment today. The idea that you would spend hours playing video games is just not real anymore..”

I’m guessing they forgot that there are other two consoles that exists for the simple sake of hardcore gaming.  It seems to me that the wide success of the Nintendo DS and the Nintendo Wii are really starting to get to Nintendo’s ego, kinda reminding me of what happened to the former powerhouse Sony. People just never seem to learn….

Zelda TP BoxPersonally, I don’t quite agree with these statements because I don’t believe gamers were ever “bored” nor tired of long hours of gaming, but rather enjoyed and thrived in it’s gaming value.  Look at all those MMORPG geeks out there spending their lives online building up their characters?  Look at the success of hardcore games like Gears of War, God of War, Halo3, and hell even Zelda TP and Metroid Prime 3? Gamers still want games that provide a long satisfying gaming experience.

But perhaps, maybe Nintendo was referring to all the casual gamers out there? There’s no denying that they’ve tapped into a market of gamers who whole heartily enjoy all these mini simple games. Was that who they were referring to? If so, those gamers were never really bored either, but rather, didn’t really play games in the first place.

I dunno. I said this once and I’ll say it again. Nintendo is weird.
