Heh, well I suspected that this will happen. It seems that recently mega-hype Xbox 360’s Halo 3 has managed to topple the Wii’s dominance for the first time in 9 months. Halo 3 sold a total insane amount of 3.3 million copies, pushing the sales of the Xbox 360 to 527, 000 units for September. The Wii, with it’s usual limited supply of availability only sold a mere 501,000 units.
This of course doesn’t come as a surprise considering the Wii still doesn’t have a game to compete against Halo 3, or for the matter, any of the major Xbox 360 games yet. Metroid Prime 3 being only release in the US hasn’t made its impact around the world yet only sold 170,000 copies in September (note that it had 400k sales in August). Everyone is still awaiting of the coming of the Mario Galaxy giant next month to see how well this one will fair (big numbers are expected). And Super Smash Bros Brawl isn’t arriving until February 2008.
Although this isn’t really a big deal, but like I said before, Nintendo put themselves into this position by focusing too much on the casual simple stuff. They should take note of this instead of talking about how people are bored of longer gaming. Hopefully 2008 will be a more “serious” year.
Update : I should note that these figures are only for the US and that Wii console sales will probably not rise much even when future hit games like Mario Galaxy, and SSBB launches unless Nintendo ramps up more shipments of Wiis to compensate for more sale. Therefore, this news is not of even as significant as I originally made it out to be.
